This famous collection began in 1921 when Duncan Phillips opened two galleries in his mansion as a memorial to his beloved father and brother. In the same year he also married Marjorie Acker, a painter by profession. Their combined love of art spurred them on, and together they amassed an unequalled collection. This included French Impressionists like Auguste Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party. This particular piece sold for a record price of $125,000 in 1923. Also included in the envied collection were Post- Impressionists, cubists, American modernists and 17th and 18th century masters. The beauty of the collection is that it is slightly out of the ordinary. They purposely choose pieces that possessed unique qualities and showed the artist's own vision. There are both permanent and traveling exhibitions on display, with the Goh annex, which opened in 1989, housing the majority of the temporary ones. Some of the well known artists' represented here are, the Swiss painter Paul Klee, the Americans Arthur Dove and Mark Rothko. The brilliant Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet and Edgar Degas are also proudly on display. The Music Room is largely occupied by cubist Georges Braque, one of Phillip's favorite artists. Art students are always coming and going and will be on hand to discuss any works in detail, should you so desire. |
